opening data base files

I have been sent a DVD which contains a file in db format (data base).

I cannot get it to open properly with any application on my mac.

I have osx 10.4 Is there an application I can download which will open it??

Do you know what database app created the file on that DVD?
What is the source for that db format file? What type of database is it (in general)?
