I want to boot from an external firewire drive on an older G4 tower. I see the firewire drive fine in Startup Disk. I can select it. However when I restart I get a couple of question marks and then the computer boots of the internal drive. The external drive appears in the Finder, disk utilities etc.

I have used this external drive to boot off of with other Macs.

Any ideas?

Are the other Macs you have booted of that hard drive Intel or PPC based?
If I remember right the PPC based only would work on the pre-Intel Macs as OF / EFI is so different.

I used a method from a tutorial in MacFixit July 5 2007. "How to Clone the Tiger Installer DVD to a FireWire Drive" It involves using Disk Utility to make a disk image of the install disk.

I have successfully used this procedure to update other computers that do not have a DVD reader.
