OS 10 startup

G-4 desktop running panther.
I tried to load a classic system OS-9 bu changing the startup disc to the OS-9 disc.
I now get only a question mark.
How can I get around this.

Hold down the option key immediately after starting up/restarting, and you should get a screen that presents you with options for selecting all bootable volumes. Just select your regular OS X volume and it should work.

Also, you can try holding down the "x" key at startup to auto-boot into OS X.

I tried both suggestions.
Using the X key I get the same folder with a question mark.
Booting with the option key gives me a screen with two icons, one arrow pointing left
one with circular arrow.
Both go nowherw except the time clock appaers.
Thanks again for the suggestions.
Any other thoughts?

What model G4 do you have?

If it's capable of booting into OS 9, did you install the OS 9 drivers when you installed OS X?

Sorry,
Its a G-4 Tower.
It was given to me by a friend.
I do not know if the drivers were installed.
I just assumed that I would be able to do as I had in the past with my 9600.
It wasn't broke and I fixed it.
Thanks for the help, I can't tell you much more.

Open your System Profiler and look under Hardware and post what it says here.

I cannot get anywhere.
I get the folder with question mark.
After trying holding the option key I get a screen with 2 arrow Icons, neither which will go anywhere.
CD try will not open.
I can't get to any part of !0.
Thanks Keith

Near the CD tray entrance, there's a small hole. Straighten a paper clip and push it in, that should open the CD tray. Put your OS X disc in and boot holding the C key down.

If a system disc is already in there, boot holding the C key down.

Thanks Bob,
I can open the door but there is no place to insert a clip of any sort no pin hole or no relief hole I can see.

Take a closer look. There should be a small hole there, maybe just a little below the door opening.

Hi Bob,
Got door open by holding down mouse(found on macfixit).I only have Jaguar but it booted and I am using disk utility to verify/repair.
Thanks to all who answered my cry for help

I reloaded system software to Jaguar(the only disks I have)
The computer now shuts down randomly.
Even after resetting energy saver prefs.
