OS X 10.3 Panther Upgrade

I have a iBook with a G4 800Mhz processor. It should run the Panther 10.3 but it came installed Jaguar. The place where I picked it up gave me the Panther disks and it says eMac Software Install and Restore on the disks. The sales guy said that the disks that came with my iBook got lost but the ones he gave me would work. I dont want to lose all of my system settings or files and I was wondering if I could do an "Upgrade" install from the Restore disks. Since these are the eMac disks will it make my iBook crash or unusable? Someone told me that I should use the software called Pacifist from www.charlessoft.com to try the upgrade install. Basically I just don't want to get screwed and have a machine that doesn't work. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

First: welcome to the forum, Chris! ;)
Ok, you shouldn't worry for the label eMac Software Install... This says, that this panther was just bundled with an eMac, but it's the same os.
Yes, you can update, but some ppl wouldn't recommend this. I read few times, that ppl had some probs after they updated panther. Anyway, there were a couple of ppl that had probs after fresh install as well. So, just insert the dvd, boot and make sure you click on customize. I didn't update my jaguar, so I am not sure what will be added to your panther os. But nothing will get lost. Panther will make a folder called old system or so and you will have access to your old data anytime. Make sure you save your network settings, if you have set up any special locations.

Well I used to be the typical PC Mac basher because I had only used OS 9 and I knew that UNIX and Linux was where it was at. I have come to enjoy working with Novell, Linux, Unix, and ... yes even Windows. I have a lot of PC's cuz that is the typical computer nerd thing to do... you dont collect baseball cards you get freaking computers. My last PC was an Athalon XP 2400+ system with the usual 1Gb of Ram, 7200 Rpm 8mb cache 120 Gig HD, GeForce 4 Ti 440. I was running Red Hat 9, Suse 8.2, Windows 2000, and 2000 Server on it. But my girlfriend got a Titanium Power Book because it was "cute" so I couldnt help but bash... but I soon learned it had OS X on it and after some research I came to have some respect for it. I used it for a few weeks and it kind of grew on me... almost like a cancerous tumor. But after she took it back I knew I had to get one. It felt like the first time that my hard drive crashed with everything on it. So I configured my Linux and Windows boxes to look like Mac OS X with the whole silver thing going on. Silver is my favorite color as well. So then I even started putting Apple desktop backgrounds on my computers and hell I even got and eMac poster. So I got an iBook and retired a few of my computers to a nice little Linux Virtual Server cluster. My Dell laptop is running Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition though, just cuz I need to get comfortable with all the features it has. So im not a total convert.. not yet, but after reading about the whole Virginia Tech thing with the 1100 G5's and it being the #3 supercomputer in the world... maybe their is life outside of the Itanium and Opteron? Who knows though.
Until next time

Lots of life.

The way to go installing Panther without having to back up and wipe the hard drive is Archive and Install. It should be a custom setting... look for it, I don't remember where in the Install thing it is.

Thanks for the new information. I havent attempted the installation yet I have to wait until Thursday cuz I have a ton of programming homework to do for class.

The ibook is pretty new, I have only read about problems with older macs and upgrading, I have a 1 gig and a 867 set of powerbooks and I chanced the upgrade only, it was smooth as silk.....slow silk, but no problems at all...

Wow, Windows Server 2003 Enterprise? Windows 2000 Professional? 2000 Server? That software must have cost you a fortune! You must have been saving for a LONG time!

;)

Seriously, welcome to the Mac platform -- I have no doubts that you'll love every minute of it.
