OS X Login screen burnt onto iMac G5 screens

Hello everyone,

At work there is a real problem with the login screens being "burnt" onto the screen from being kept on the same screen all night. There are 2 iMacs that I know of which have had this happen.

I have always thought LCD screens don't suffer this problem, so I thought maybe it could be caused by something else (maybe a graphic card problem?).

It is not possible for an image to burn-in permanently on an LCD screen.

Although LCD screens can have an image remaining on the screen for a short time, (a result of 'persistence'), you will find that turning the power off for as much as 24-48 hours will cause any lingering image to dissipate with no trace.

I have 2 G3 iMacs used as servers, no screen saver, and powered on virtually since new. Both have permanently etched CRTs. An LCD will not suffer this same fate.

While it's comforting that you state it can't happen, that doesn't help if it _does_ happen. Are you sure about the 24-48 hours? My PowerBook's screen has been turned off for longer periods of time, and still the Mac's menubar is clearly visible when the display should only display a full, for example red, screen.

But shouldn't the displays automatically turn off when they're at the login screen for more than a few minutes? Is that something that can be set? (User preferences of course wouldn't matter there since there's no-one logged in when you're at the login screen...)

It's still all about persistence. No permanent damage can take place, as compared to a CRT display. Rest time for an LCD will eventually relax any persistence. 24-48 hours is just a normal amount of time for that recovery. It's not a permanent thing.
