OS X / OS 9.x Question

I have a G4 iBook which I recently upgraded from 10.3x to 10.5x, knowing full well that I wouldn't be able to run Classic with the new operating system. I upgraded all of my old OS 9.x software, with the exception of my Palm software. I have an old Palm device on which I've stored all of my professional contacts. I have tried to upgrade the software and access my old Palm files, and have even been on the phone several times for an hour or longer with Palm Mac technicians, to no avail. So, I was wondering if there's any way I could boot up my Mac using an OS 9 startup disk, access the Palm files from my back up Firewire drive and print out the data? Trouble is, I don't have an OS 9.x startup disk. So here are my questions:

1. Would this work?
2. If yes, where can I download an OS 9.x startup disk
3. If no, what are my options?

I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Believe me, as I stated earlier, I've tried to access my old files using the PalmDesktop 4.2.1 to no avail. I've even been on the phone with Palm desk support for hours at a time. They can't even figure out how to do it.

If your computer could boot MacOS 9 before you upgraded MacOS X, then it can boot MacOS 9 after.

I don't think copyvet is seeking a pirated disc nor that such a disc isn't simply available for download.

The first solution in this context, I think, would be to use the install disc that came with the iBook to install OS 9 on an external disk. However, more specific to this case, I would recommend you seek out a Palm user community where you might be able to fetch more effective assistance that doesn't require a reinstall.

Thanks, Earthsaver, that's a good suggestion. And, no, I'm not looking for a pirated disk. Just advice on how to solve this problem.

An(y) iBook G4 should not be able to boot to OS 9. The earliest possible OS to boot should be 10.2.7 or so and that on the first iBook G4s out there.

If you need the applications for your Palm and those positively aren't available for X, see if you can find Mac OS X 9 bootable discs from somewhere - e.g. ebay or shopgoodwill.
With those discs, you could use sheepshaver http://sheepshaver.cebix.net/

Thanks -- best response yet. Can I maintain my current OS 10.5x install while running sheepshaver? What I'm trying to avoid is having to completely wipe and rebuild my set up just to get access to these old files.

It's not that I need applications for my Palm, it's that their upgrade software is awful and doesn't recognize their old data files. I don't want to go into all the different things I've tried to make this work (as I mentioned, I've been on the phone with Palm support on several occasions for several hours, and they can't even figure it out). My intention is to retrieve this data and then find a different way to store and access it that's less troublesome.

So, the contacts are all still on your Palm, right? Perhaps the easier solution is to use a third-party sync utility to get the data off and into a more usable form or different application. Have you looked into The Missing Sync?

Sheepshaver is an app so on your host 10.5 you will keep everything as they are.

And Missing Sync doesn't sound like a bad idea to try either.

No, unfortunately the data is only on my synced files, which I have backed up to an external Firewire drive. They were on my Palm, but I accidentally allowed the Palm to run out of juice and when I recharged it, they were lost (hence my problem). This is why I really need to get OS 9 running again -- so I can resync the device, transfer the files, and possibly upgrade to a newer Palm. Sounds like sheepshaver is the way to go. Thanks again.
