osx 10.4.11 Vanishing Hard Disk space

My recently acquired Mac G4 12" Powerbook is losing 30 or 40 MB every day. I went to utilities and clicked things and get the message that HFS volume needs repair. I understand this can be done using Disc 1 of Tiger. If this is the right remedy, do I just insert the disc and follow instruction? Am I in danger of wiping my applications?

You won't see any instructions for repairing the hard drive.
Boot to your OS X installer disk.
click through the first couple of windows, and you should then see menus at the top of the screen. Click on Utilities, and then click on Disk Utility.
Select your hard drive from the left side of that Disk Utility window, then Click Repair Disk (not Repair Disk Permissions)
If errors are reported, repeat the same test until no problems are found.
When that completes, quit Disk Utility, then Quit the Installer (which you don't need to do), which will force you to restart.
