OSX 10.4.6 Shared Printing

I'm new to MAC's and have an new iMAC duo, I'm trying to access a shared printer on a XP system. The Printer is an OfficeJet G85. I have created the printer various ways, IP, Samba using various logon methods as recommended by docs.info.apple.com and none are working for different reasons. Getting a little desperate

I'd look at the Windows side of things first... You have to simply _share_ it on the PC, then it should automatically show up in the Printer control on the Mac. (Ah yeah, it's "Mac", not "MAC", "MAC" is a term in networks "MAC address", whereas "Mac" is short for "Macintosh".)

The printer is already shared, I've disabled the firewall and installed the Unix Printer Service and set TCPIP Printer Server to auto and started. On the Mac side I go to Printer Setup Util, Hold the "option" key and select Add. I then hold the "option" key and press "More Printers". Under "Device" I select "Windows Printer via Samba", Device Name: G85, Device URL: smb://(real)user(name):(real)password@(real)workgroup/(real)server/(real)sharename.

When I send a "Test Printing" job to the defaulted queued printer, I get the following:
%!PS-adobe-3.0
%RBINumCopies: 1
%%Pages: (atend)
%APL_DSC_Encoding: UTF8
%%Title: (U

That looks like it's trying to send PostScript data to a non-PS printer. (If you get that on the printer, on paper, that is...) Have you tried connecting the printer directly to the Mac? Would it work then?

The reason I asked above is that basically, it should "just work" without any cryptical mumbo-jumbo. Can you connect to the printer (if it's "just shared" via Windows printer sharing on the Windows machine, without any UNIX services etc.) from another Windows client machine? If you, on the Mac, go to System Preferences, Printers, and there click on the plus sign below the printer list, does it not show up in the list?

It generally sounds to me like you didn't actually try the most simple and straight-forward way. Of course I could get the wrong impression...

The process for 10.4 is a bit different, bobw... But generally, that's what I meant, yeah...

It does not reflect my printer model (HP OfficeJet G85) I installed the Mac OS drivers from HP but no go. I also installed the hpijs file. For some reason it always selects postscript.

No universal driver for that older printer. Maybe HP will release one soon, but they don't update every model.
You can get the Printer Setup Utility to recognize that older driver by this process:
Get Info for the Printer Setup Utility (in your file menu)
click on the box in the info window - 'Open in Rosetta'
Close that info window, and now open Printer Setup Utility.
Click Add Printer, and you should then see the G85, and you can continue with adding it.
