OSX update

I just tried to update my OSX Version 10.3.9 and received the following message:

“MacOSXUpdCombo10.4.11PPC cannot be installed on this computer.”

I am using an iMac -- vintage 2002.

Does anyone know what that means?
As a result, I am also unable to update my Safari browser (Version 1.3.2) to Safari 3.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please keep in mind that you are dealing with an unsophisticated computer user!

It is a paid upgrade to go from Mac OS X 10.3.9 (or any 10.3.X version) to 10.4. Likewise from 10.4.X to 10.5. You must purchase Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger" in order to upgrade your system any farther (or you can skip straigh to 10.5 if you like, but either way, you must purchase either Mac OS X 10.4 or Mac OS X 10.5).

Safari 3, if I remember correctly, requires 10.4.
