Out of focus fuzzy X

I just upgraded my imac to one of the lovely new ones with a flat screen - this introduced me to X (Jag). I have to admit that I am finding the transision from OS9 to X rather difficult. One of the things that puts me off is the fuzzy out of focus look to everything. If I boot with OS 9 (sacralidge!) everything looks sharp and business like again. How can I get this sharp interface in X instead of the (to my mind gimicky) visuals provided?

Supplimentary question: is it really true that things are easier to achieve with X? So far it has proved less productive than 9 to me. Is there any hope for a time-served mac loyalist?

Keith (in Scotland).

Are you sure you're using the native resolution for you monitor under X? On the flat-panel monitors, if you use a "non-native" resolution, the image will appear blurred or out-of-focus. Try bumping the resolution up in OS X...

very few people that I meet lve OSX right out of the box when upgrading from OS9 for the first time.

I have several co-workers that I pushed to upgrade. For the first week all I heard was "dan, I hate this, and why isn't it like it used to be?, etc, etc"

But about a week or two of "adjustment time" and I heard the exact opposite from them.

Truth be told I could say the same thing about my experience with X. But of course, I was using the alpha and beta versions which didn't help the transition. I was frustrated with X until some smart sole (on this very website I might add) posted "OSX is NOT and upgrade to 9, don't think of it that way, and you'll be happier with it!"

Which, to his/her credit, did it for me. I haven't looked back since. Navigation structure changes a bit in X, and so the user must too. I think you'll be happier in X if you just give it some time and start tweaking it to fit YOUR styles.

You can adjust the level of anti-aliasing (what causes that fuzzy appearance) in System Preferences >> General. It's called "font smoothing."

I too have a flat-panel iMac and have found the Light setting to be most pleasing, despite the fact Apple recommends the Medium setting for flat-panel displays.

If you find you just can't stand any level of font smoothing, the Tinker Tool utility will let you turn it off completely.

Apple's suggestion for font smoothing on a LCD display is an absolute JOKE!

When I set it to that, I get coloured marks around all my text, and it becomes simply too clunky to look at. I use the CRT setting on my LCD and I think it's beautiful.

Thanks for this help and reassurance.

I wonder if a sosumi (or equivalent) style makeover would help as well. I read something about this, but could not find the sosumi website or downloads to try. Has anyone experience of replacement styles?

Keith.

Hey, for me it is a lot easier/productive to work with X. especially the navigation; i think the panel-mode (is that the name in english?) makes it easier for the brain to remember where you put your stuff. And the way you can modify your tool-bar. but i will admit that i never got around to start using the home folder. i just put my folders at the top and made a divider. I only use the home-folder for automatic storage of iphoto and itunes stuff, and the preferences ofcourse.

see attachment.

good luck with your new OS!:)

that's a BEAUTIFUL organized OS you have there!!!!

senne.

the plan with the toolbar is:
at the far left; navigation, then you have the geek-stuff (matching icons), after that i have the small applications i use all the time followed by search-applications i need in my schoolwork (space, bible, sherlock) and last: documents i currently use all the time (like school-essays in the work and my shoppinglist :) )
yepp, now it's official, i got no life.
