Outlook 2011 and exchange 2007 pst question

I am a newb and just got a macbook pro just his last week. This is a lot different than windows from what I am used to.

Right now I am using VPN tracker to connect to my work place so I can use the exchange email server. I have installed Office for Mac 2011. So far everything is setup and working accordingly.

I am used to using outlook in windows where I download the emails to a pst file so the emails are not stored on the server. I can see emails on the server, I just want to know if there is a way to setup Mac Outlook to download the current emails to mac storage file.

Can Mac os x mail app be setup for exchange to download the emails off the server? I want to use the exchange setup option so it automatically downloads emails from the server. Hopefully I explained this pretty good.

When I did the account setup I used the exchange option for mail setup.

Any help would be appreciated, I tried searching but didn't really find anything that pertained to this.

Since 10..6.x on apple has bought Active Exchange Sync from Microsoft. The only thing Microsoft only sold Active Exchange Sync for Exchange 2007 or better.

I am sorry you bought Microsoft office since if, when you have the VPN connection and are on the Exchange Domain, all you have to do is launch OS X mail and setup the exchange username/password and tell Mail it is a Microsoft Exchange Account. Here is a CNET HOWTO Video for OS X Mail Exchange and should show you how to use Mail on Exchange.

I haven't bought Office yet, its just the trial. I am just looking for a way to connect to the exchange server to where the send/receive is automaticly detects emails and downloads the emails from the server. From what I know is that Active sync for exchange is just live interaction for emails on the server, if it's anything like on the iphone.

I will check out the link and get back to you to see if the article helps or not.
