Panther Install Problems

Hey guys, I hope i posted in the right forum, I think I did.. I saw another thread awhile back dealing with my same issue..

I got a few versions of Panther preview from a friend who has ADC. I tried installing OS X 10.3 preview but everytime It gives me "Your need to restart your computer" in the 4 different lang.

I tried reseting the PRAM as suggested in a previous thread with the same problem, but it made no difference.

I also have up to date firmware for my G3, It has whatever came on the OS 9.21 install CD ( I think thats the newest firmware still)

Here's my mac setup:
G3/400MHZ Blue & White Rev.2
512mb SDRAM
8GB HD/15GB HD
RADEON 7000 PCI MAC
Mac OS 9.22 + Mac OS X 10.2.8
replaced 32X CDROM with LiteON 16101B CDRW (works fine)

Hope someone can help me get panther up :)

Does the kernel panic screen (that's what it is you're seeing with the languages) happen early in the boot process from CD, while installing or after installation? What build are you trying? (Yes, several, I know. The newest being...?)

I turn on the mac..hold down "C", the boot screen comes up that circular loading thing starts moving like normal, and then a few seconds later the loading thing at the bottom stops and a black window comes containing the error.

Ive tried installing 7B74 and 7B53 and in both cases I get the same "Restart your computer" kernel panic Screen.

I'd run the Hardware Test CD-ROM that you got with your Mac. Sounds like a problem with RAM to me. I've had a RAM brick work in one but not another version of OS X (Puma but not Jaguar).

Hmm Hardware Test CD-ROM? I only got a System reinstall disc that has OS 8.6 on it. Is there any memory tests I can RUN? I tried reconfiguring the memory every way and it still gets the Kernel panic error upon boot of the OS X 10.3 CD.

Heres my memory configuration: Its a bit odd, probably not the best performance wise but it works stable:

(1) 256mb Noname SDRAM PC100 CAS2
(1) 128mb Micron MAC SDRAM PC100 CAS2 (original memory)
(1) 128mb Micron SDRAM PC100 CAS2
(1) 64mb Micron SDRAM PC100 CAS2

I tried every way...even just put in the original Mac 128mb Stick (the one the came with the G3) but I still would get the kernel panic screen at the same time, same place.

Hmmm

The hardware test CD-ROM didn't ship with Macintoshes until later in the G4/iBook/PowerBook game. I own a G4/400 Yikes! machine that did not include a hardware test CD. I know of no B/W G3 machines that came with a hardware test CD.

I would try installing a later build of Panther if you can. Earlier builds would probably be more prone to crashing simply because they haven't been optimized for all machines.

We fixed it, he used toast to burn the DMG and not Disk Copy. Somehow that messed up the CD from booting properly so it gave a kernel panic i guess.

Im running panther now, and it seems faster than 10.2.8 :). And the Quartz Extreme Hack still works :) nice stuff.

Thanks for the help guys

Yeah smitty Mac OS 10.2x Disk copy doesn't see my burner, yet it works with toast and iTunes fine. It is supported in Disk copy, but only the original firmware is listed and my drive has a newer firmware...I tried to flash back on a pc but couldnt find the Original firmware that apple's site says Disk copy supports.

You'd think that Disk Copy wouldnt care about the firmware, guess it does though.

Once I installed Panther that same burner worked in Disk Utility..(looks like Disk Copy is integrated into Disk Utility now)

As long as panther supports it thats fine with me :)

this really sucks...i have cd 2 + 3 installed, im just waiting to be able to burn cd1 and install it.........is there any hack for toast to recognize all the files? burning a mounted volume doesnt work, and burning the dmg as an image doesnt work either.....heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelp!!!!!!!
