Panther on a 366MHz 320RAM clamshell ibook?

Clamshell iBook G3/366, 320 MB of RAM, 6 GB internal, CD-ROM, airport

I know technically Panther is supposed to run on any G3, G4, G5 with 128 or more RAM, but will it run at least decently on a 366 with 320 RAM? I don't mind adding more ram if it will help, but something tells me at 320, for mostly word processing and wireless surfing, it will make negligible difference.

Also, after installation, how much hard disk space will I have left over? I understand the OS X system is pretty big? I've beefed my system with all sorts of 3rd party stuff so I can't check my own (Jaguar) reliably.

Any comments appreciated, thanks!

It will run beautifully. :) I installed it on my 466 clamshell and it runs nicely, and also my 350 iMac and it runs perfectly.

If you upgrade then it should only take up 1 GB of space, if you clean install it will take up about 3 GB of space.

i agreed with Trip... i did upgrade from jaguar to panther. didn't notice any slow down on my machine...in fact some of the software runs a bit faster when opening file like Acrobat Reader... my installation took about 1G - 1.3G HD space... i have not install XCode... XCode alone will took around 1G... not sure...

Thanks guys; I especially like Trip's "will run beautifully" floors me. You try running Windows XP Pro on a 300MHz lol :P

I'm going to be upgrading from Classic so yeah it'll be a clean install, so I should have around 2GB left over (after apps and junk) for files, which will be more than enough.

Others, feel free to continue to post comments...

you want to check HD size. I think original equipment on those is really small (my 300 had a 3 gig). Upgrading them is no small feat, since they snap together in many little places. The rep's technician here in Cairo broke my keyboard while doing it (bent the cable one too many times).

Yea, if you're going to replace the HD either have an Apple professional do it, or pray and fast a ton before you go in yourself. And whatever you do DO NOT pull on anything immediately, look for what it's attached to before you move anything.

My keyboard+trackpad is forever ruined because I was in such a hurry to replace my HD. Now I have to use an external keyboard+mouse all the time. But it was worth it. ;)

I'm not worried. It comes with a 6 gig drive, which is more than enough for all my files (well the ones I'd carry around with my at least).

Also, a friend might be selling me a little 12GB firewire drive that's about the size of a credit card, about 8 thick, so if I get into trouble that'll do. I've also got a nice huge LaCie 60 gig drive I can cart around if it became really necessary.

Thanks for the advice though, always appreciated!

Just be sure to keep at least a gigabyte free at all times for virtual memory, cache files and the like.

Worried? As from what I read (which wasn't much) that's about clamshell+OSX buyers getting refunds for their machines+OS. Why be worried?

Yeah, getting refunds because their machines didn't operate properly under OS X...that's what concerns me. BUT from what I can see it only applies to DVD playback and 3D acceleration...which doesn't worry me that much.

No, its some folks, Bancroft et al, who were psised about an earlier version that didn't work on their config. You can swear off ever using OS X again and get your money back for X.1

Your machine will run X fine. enjoy it.

However, 'fast' is of course a variable set by the user's preferences. ;-) ... For example, I've been running OS X Public Beta back then on my clamshell iBook 300 (with 192 MB RAM) and found it quite nice and fast. I certainly wouldn't want to work on that machine nowadays... If it's only for the casual webbrowsing (at 800*600, that's not THAT much fun...), e-Mail reading and text editing (with TextEdit, preferrably), then it might be okay... (Even for me.)

Thanks fryke, I figured 'fast' was a relative term. Do you know if the Graphite's resolution is up to 1024x768 or is it 800x600 as well?

PS Thanks pds.
