Partition disk for ubuntu linux without erasing data!

How do i go about doing this? (Disk Utility Erases) I really want to dual boot with ubuntu (by pressing option at start up to show my two partitions) without messing up my current os x.
 
partitioning a disk envolves erasing it, it's part of the format process. there's no way around it unfortunately.
