-Exactly what is "partitioning" and should I do this on my new hard drive?
-Dose it help the computer (Mac G4, 400 Mhz) perform better or would I need a faster processor?

Partitioning is a way of splitting up a hard drive into smaller "chunks" that would then be formatted individually, and would appear to you as if they were separate hard drives.

For example, if you had a 120GB hard drive, you could create two partitions of 60GB each, and have it seem as if you had two 60GB hard drives... or two 20GB partitions and an 80GB... or 12 10GB partitions. It's completely up to you how you partition the drive.

In some cases, you'd want to partition... in others, you would not. Partitioning itself does not provide any performance boost at all, but it may make developing, backing up, and running multiple operating systems easier.

For the casual home user, don't worry about partitioning.
