Reader photos/notes on Replacement for Original Airport Card - (from a reader email this weekend)

I have found a good alternative for the original airport card (802.11b)

Thanks, macinside "

The linked page has photos of the original Apple Airport card and an apparently identical form factor Sony Vaio card, which he installed and tested in an early iBook Airport card slot.

Thats quite intresting. Wonder what the price diffrence would be. shame 802.11b has gone the way of the sega megadrive.

Eh? 802.11b is still alive and kicking and will be around for years to come. Most of the Centrino based laptops are using 802.11b and it is only the recent ones that have the ability to use 802.11g.

Thats a fair point man. I stand corrected, but im aways looking for the latest stuff and thinking of future things. Guess its cause im a mega geek.
On a lighter note if you have a 802.11g network if it true that if you add an 802.11b device it drops the whole newtork to that speed?

802.11b is rather comparable to the CD-R. Sure, there's DVD-R now, but you'll find that 'newer' drives, i.e. DVD-drives, can still read and burn CD-Rs. The MegaDrive, however, ... :)

I wondered about the interoperability (i.e. speed drop) issue, too. Then I thought, I'll keep my 802.11b WAP for a while, anyway, so my PB has to take the slower course for a while... Enough for surfing/working on the 'net, anyway...

but as I see, the airport card is still cheaper. So, what is it good for then? Or is that finding attractive since the Airport cards are no more "available"?

It is true that if you use a 802.11b card with a 802.11g network, the speed of everyone else accessing the network will drop to 802.11b speeds. This is due to the way the network protocol works.

What this means for users in the years to come is that they'll have to secretly use 802.11b enabled devices, because if they are found out people will stone them to death :)

how sure is "may be"? Sounds really good. Did anyone ever test? I don't find a smiliar form factor that promising, but it would be wonderful if the Sony G card would work on older books.

I'd worry about the antenna. Even with an Apple antenna the range of an extreme card is limited at best. How well can it work if the antenna is internal to the card and under the keyboard?

Slightly OT, but still in the same neighborhood - you can still buy the original Apple Airport b cards - just go to an authorized repair center. They are not available as retail items, but they are available as repair parts. The guy I bought one from last week said there is no shortage of them at all. At ± $110 they cost more than MSRP, but it's still better than the $150-$180 they go for on e-bay

Could someone _please_ try the G card from Sony with a white Apple iBook G3 or something? :) :) :)

yeah, that's the correction for stupidity ;)

the g looks different on the website though and let me add to fryke's plea.
maybe I can unload my new b card on e-bay for a buck and a half and turn a little profit. ;)

Ok, the one who will test the Sony G card and post his results will get one year free macosx.com email account. What do you think? :) ;)

Feeling brave, I've ordered one. I should have one on Friday, assuming it gets dispatched tomorrow. Fingers crossed :)

I'll let you guys know what happens when the card comes. I suppose if it doesn't work I can send it back to the company. Zammy, you better pony up the free email account if I get it working :)
