photo editing question

How can I take a photo and produce a lower res version of it for use on the web? I searched all over iPhoto and did not find a way to do it. A blurb on an Apple page said it could be done in Mail, but I can't find that either. What would you recommend for doing that? Is there any particular freeware or $$$ware that you'd recommend? Thanks.

Look under the "File" menu for an "export" option.

Also, iPhoto is not the program to be editing and exporting graphics for web use. While it may produce decent results, you will have much greater control over size and resolution with a program that specializes in photo editing and exporting, like FireWorks, PhotoShop or PhotoShop Elements.

Thanks. Based on your reply, and a related thread I clicked on, here are programs I can look into: Goldberg (free), the GIMP (free but have to jump through some hoops to install), Graphic Converter, Photo Line, Fireworks, PhotoShop, PhotoShop Elements.

My recommendation is GraphicConverter or Photoshop Elements. By the MacOS X version of the GIMP is a simple drag and drop installation. You can leave the hoops in the rec room.

the easiest way i've found (although i'm a graphic designer, sometimes, i just want a photo smaller to put on the web just to show someone), and although it's still not perfect, just slect the photo, and press the mail button. it'll resize it and add it to a new message, at which point you just save the image to the desktop and then close mail.

EDIT: just played around witrh export...

it's exactly what i wanted!
