playlists on iPod

I just updated my iPod because I got an iTrip and needed to transfer the station playlist. But now there are no playlists on my iPod after the update.
In the playlist category on the iPod, there is a subcategory called
<my name>'s iPod and in there is simply a list of every song on the iPod.
There are no playlists. What am I doing wrong?

I think its on automatic - how can I check to be sure?

1. Plug it in and open iTunes;
2. Select the iPod in the source pane and hit the config button (the new button that appears at the bottom-right where the EQ button is; it looks like an iPod).
3. Check the radio buttons: the first two will automatically update the iPod, the last one (after the playlist list) will force you to drag playlists manually and won't update when you plug in yout iPod (I believe).
