Please Help: Camino Not Working Properly!

Amie

Mac Convert for Life
I have two browsers that I use as my main browsers (Firefox and Safari). I also have Camino, which I used to use a lot but haven't lately. Tonight, I decided to use Camino (just for variety) and now it's not working. Never had any problems with Camino before. It's been a few weeks since I've used it.

Here's what happens: Every time I launch Camino, my start page pops up, but in front of that are two windows. One is alerting me that I'm going to an unencrypted page and do I want to continue? The other alert box is asking me if I want to set Camino as my default browser. When I try clicking "OK" or "No" on either of these alerts, it doesn't do anything. When I try to quit Camino, it doesn't do anything. When I go to the Camino drop-down menu in my menu bar, the Quit option is faded out. The only way for me to quit is to force quit, which I've done four times now.

I've repaired permissions via Disk Utility and ran OnyX and restarted my computer. The same problem persists. I even trashed the Camino preference list (.plist) and tried relaunching the application again. Same problem.

When I launch Camino, here's what my Console log reads:

Mac OS X Version 10.3.9 (Build 7W98)
2006-02-17 20:31:11 -0500
2006-02-17 20:32:10.932 Camino[354] Unable to set languages - language 'English' not a valid ISO language identifier

If anyone has any idea what's going on and/or how to correct this problem, I would really appreciate it.

perhaps try deleting ~/Library/Application Support/Camino

That's actually where Camino stores most of its settings.

That sounds dangerous. It won't mess up anything???

That would delete most of your personal settings, like bookmarks, cookies, history, etc. Sort of a last resort. If it comes down to that, you'll probably want to remove items from inside that folder one by one to see exactly where the problem lies. (Make a duplicate of the whole folder before doing anything, just in case.)

Have you tried re-downloading Camino? Maybe something in the application itself got corrupt somehow.

The latest stable version of Camino - version 1.0 came out a couple of days ago. I've installed it on two machines without any difficulty. All bookmarks etc. still work.

Yeah, I was thinking of just trashing the entire application and re-installing it. But then I would have to start over from scratch--bookmarks and all. :(

Actually, Camnio 1.0 Beta has been out for more than a couple days. I installed the update a while ago with no problems. Like I said, I've never had any trouble with Camino. Until now.

Installing the latest version won't throw out your bookmarks.

You could export your bookmarks to another browser and then import them again when Camino is reinstalled.

You could just move your Bookmark file to the desktop and replace it after a new install.

Yeah, I know installing an update won't throw out your bookmarks. That's not what I'm talking about. I'm referring to if I have to trash Camino and re-install it from scratch. Then, I won't have any bookmarks.

It's not a beta any more. Version 1.0 supersedes v1.0b2
Hmmm. That's odd. Where can I find this latest version? When Camino wasn't working properly, the first thing I did was go to MacUpdate.com and VersionTracker.com to look and see if there was a more recent version of Camino. I did not see one.

Update: Camino is now working properly! I have no idea what happened, but it's working fine now. I think it was just having a bad day. LOL Weird... I didn't do anything after I repaired permission, trashed the preference file, ran OnyX, rebooted, etc.--and it still wasn't working after all that. That was ... yesterday, I think. Today, I launch Camino and everything is back to normal. Straaaaaaange!

I didn't mean to eradicate every trace of Camino! I just meant trash and reinstall the application. This will not affect your bookmarks or settings in any way.

Anyway, glad things are working now. :)

It won't? Well, then, I just learned something from you! I thought that if you trashed an application, all your settings, preferences, etc. went with it. Thanks for the info!

Usually the best place to check for any updates is at the program's site itself. Sometimes sites like MacUpdate and VersionTracker don't always update right away. Camino was updated some days ago and I too was surprised to find out about it. Then again, I did find out on digg.com that it was released. :p

I thought about that. But even if there was a new release and I hadn't updated mine yet, that shouldn't cause the version I have to not work, should it? I wouldn't think so...

Anyway, it's working fine now, though I have no idea what happened.

No, you're right. The fact that it wasn't updated wouldn't have been the cause for the problem. Most likely if you did use the latest version, it would have still given you the same problem since it was a settings/preferences issue where it might have gotten corrupted.

I thought that it might have been due to a corrupted preference file, but I ran OnyX and checked for any user and system corrupted preference files and, according to OnyX, they are all OK.

By the way, Camino isn't working properly again today. It launched and ran fine when Safari was also running but doesn't work by itself. How odd...
