Ok, here is the problem:

The audio is about .6 seconds ahead of the video. It is very noticible when watching dvds, and characters mouths do not line up with the words they are saying.

I paid 2000 dollars for my mac laptop (because macs are the best, i know), and it breaks my heart to have it all f-cked up like this.

This audio problem isnt just unique to dvd player, but its the same for quicktime, ect.

When I first got the powerbook, It would do an odd thing with the sound every once in a while, the sound would start to loop over and over in an infinite loop for five seconds or so, then return to normal. this happened once or twice a day.

Now... all of a sudden its doing this.

Can someone tell me what the cause might be, and (please god), what a possible solution might be?

I am a film student, and believe it or not, really need to be able to watch video properly on my mac. this is a big deal for me, as now i basically cant propperly edit video on my mac.

I certainly would try to back things up and see if a clean installation helps. (First try creating another user for testing and see if being logged in only with that one already helps...) If you have an external FW harddrive, you can also install the system software on that one and boot from it to see whether it works okay on that. This to see whether it's rather some hardware-related problem (which I don't think it can be...) or a software problem. If it works on a clean system, set up your PB anew completely. Make sure that you only install the things you _really_ need for the moment. The things you depend upon. And if it still works then, you're basically fine. Then you re-import your data, mail etc. from the backup and make sure everything still works fine. Every funky little utility you _also_ think you have to install might be a culprit. So for the time being, either simply forget about them or install them one by one, always going back to testing video playback in both DVD Player and Quicktime. Also do some reboots inbetween, so you don't miss when things go awry (should they go awry again...).

What version of OS X are you running on your PowerBook? I remember a "bug" a while ago that would cause the audio to stutter and/or loop continuously. It may help to upgrade your system software to the latest offering via Software Update.

I will try what the first reply suggests, though that may take a few days to back all my stuff up...
what a pain in the ass! : /

I am running osx 10.4.2, i will update, see if that helps first
UPDATE:

I installed the update, no change

I did an erase and reinstall from the installation dvd
