Port Replicator for a Macbook?

I was talking to a CSR today at OfficeMax, and we were sharing war stories about computers. I mentioned I use my MacbookPro now as a "hard drive" connecting it to a 21" cinema display, best of both worlds. But, I get concerned about disconnecting/connecting it all the time. He mentioned "Port Replicators" for PCs. Is there anything third party like that I could use for the MacBookPro? Would save wear and tear on disconnecting everything all the time to use it as a laptop. Thanks in advance.

Yes, there's port replicators (or docking stations) for MacBook Pros.
Here's one: http://www.bookendzdocks.com/Docking_Stations-Docking_Station_for_15_MacBook_Pro_Firewire_800.html

You leave all your external devices plugged into that dock, and then the MacBook Pro is 'inserted' into the dock. But you still have to plugin, then disconnect each time you change to 'portable' and back. The dock just makes the connection process easier. Some PC laptops are designed for use in a dock, with a master connector that provides all connections into one large built-in connection. That means less wear and tear on the 'normal' connectors, because the laptop connections are not used.
And, you are restricted to docks that use that proprietary connector.
Apple has never used that type of master connection (except for the now-ancient PowerBook 200 series laptops)

Wow. Not cheap, huh. How does the one side not get in the way of the CD slot? Can't quite wrap my head around what's going on....

Bookendz makes several different docks - that was just one example.
That model is for older Macbook Pro that has the CD slot in the front. You need to look at the dock that is specific for the model that you have. For example, if you have the CD slot on the right side, then you usually don't have connections on that side - all are on the left.
The models with CD slot in front, usually have connections on both left and right. Some models have the ports in different positions on each side. So, each MacBook/MacBook Pro needs the dock made for it.

Got it. At that price, though, I may have to save my $$ first and just be more careful for awhile. Great though; thanks for the info. Will do some shopping.
