Powebook dead?

Arrghh!
I have a Powerbook G3/333 Bronze and I was trying to start up from a FW harddrive with my FW card. After this the computer wont start again :(

I took out the FW card and all that but when I try to start up now the grey apple comes up for 1 sec and then a new symbol of a one way sign or something. When I try to start from the OS X installation CD the black info box (I think kernel panik) comes up.

I have tried to reset the P-RAM and the reset button at the back as well.

Plug in the power adapter, then try to start with the CD.

Did you install software for the Firewire card? This could be the problem.

I found out that it's the harddrive making this problem. When I unplug it I can start from the CD. Strange??

Now the harddrive/computer is working again. But I wonder still if there is a problem with the actual harddrive maybe?

Why I had this problem in the first place was because I reformated the whole harddrive (in two partitions) as the question mark looking for a system came up at each restart.

Now when I re-formated the drive and installed the system again, I can't copy back any stuff from the FW drive to the computer. It stops after about 600Mb and later hangs. I tried Carbon Copy Cloner, normal copy, ignore ownership etc. etc.

So maybe it's time to change the harddrive?

I'm assuming that you're trying to "clone" an OS X installation back to the internal drive -- but I'm not understanding the logic in that.

You say you can't boot from the FireWire drive. Ok, good enough. So I assume you've booted from the internal drive, where you installed OS X. Good enough there, too. Then you say you tried to use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the FireWire drive back to the internal drive, right? Well, if that is truly what you are doing, of course the process will hang... you can't clone a system on a FireWire drive on top of the system you're currently booted from.

Also, try copying off the FireWire drive in smaller chunks. Copy 300 - 400MB at a time, and see if that helps.

I said that I tried both CCC and normal copying. Its not the system in first hand I try to copy back. I am now sure that any copying and handling of data/files bigger then 5-600Mb makes the computer to hang.

The reason that I started with all this was that when I worked with big files, the computer froze. And I'm still there after changing RAM, reformating harddrive and reinstalling the system :(

Before you do anything else, use the OS Cd to boot. At the installer screen go to the Installer Menu and select Disk utility. Run the repair disk. You may need to run it several times to get the "Disk appears Okay" without any reference to hard drive fixed.

Exactly what files are you trying to copy? Doing smaller increments may take longer but you will have all the files. How much memory do you have on the powerbook?

Done disk repair several times and no complains there. There is all sorts of files and apps. I have 512Mb RAM.

I have to find the problem as I cant work properly with this problem :(
