Hey all,

What is the difference between those two computer models?
Should i be aware of anything when buying either second hand?

Could it be that the Late 2004 model is quieter, because it has a lower power consumption, because of the PowerPC 970fx processor, and thus developes less heat and because of that less fan noise?

I am aiming at the 2x2ghz model.
This should be the correct chronological order of production, imo.

I'm guessing that you mean the June 2004 G5. The Late 2004 model is a single processor 1.8 GHz.
The Early 2005 dual 2GHz will only go to 4GB maximum.
There's not huge differences between those two models that you mentioned. The largest changes come later on in the late 2005 models. All the G5s are fairly quiet, unless there's something wrong. Keeping the air flow and fan areas clean is a good way to help keep the noise down.

Thank you for your response.
After reading this apple support document:
http://support.apple.com/specs/powermac/Power_MAC_G5_Late_2004.html
i thought there were 2x2ghz models in the late 2004 family.

Right now, i'm just looking for a bit of a speed bump. My main machine is a G4 Digital Audio. It came with a 733mhz processor which i upgraded to a 1.6ghz dual version.

The 'new' machine must have PCI-X slots, because i'm trying to avoid to have to buy new audio cards, so all PCIe versions are out of the question.

I had an offer to buy a Late 2004 model, but i am afraid it could turn out to be an original Power Mac G5 series model, for the seller got confused by the different models himself (my fault, i guess ) , but i am waiting for a screenshot of the system profiler, which should reveal what model it is, shouldn't it?

At least he gave me the serial number of the mac, which is CK44SHH058J. And the graphics card installed is a NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 Ultra.
But this does not really help me determining the model.

cheers,

Please excuse my ignorance... What do you mean by 'incorrect'?
It does not exist? What brings you to that conclusion?

Maybe its a typo... i will check.

thanks for the hint,

The serial number that you posted is incorrect. It is not a valid serial number for any Apple product. One (or more) characters is incorrect. That's the only conclusion that I can make. It does not provide any result when I enter it into Apple's service support system. Try it yourself - www.apple.com/support/oss/

apparently his eyes are now that good anymore.:(

i just got a screenshot and it appears he mixed-up the '5' and the 'S'.
this is the correct number:
CK445HH0S8J

thanks for pointing that out. :)
