I have a PowerBook G4 17" 1.33 GHZ machine running OSX 10.5.5 that's booting either with a black screen or into open firmware. Any idea how I can reflash the firmware and if so, where I can download the file? Thanks, Vincent

"Open firmware" doesn't imply that it's a user-flashable firmware, as with optical drives and other hardware.

Try this... next time it boots into open-firmware, type the following commands (pressing Enter after each):
Code:
reset-nvram
reset-all
Your computer should reboot after the second one. See if that helps, and, if not, report back.

Hi,
Thank you for writing. Yes, If I use those commands it will restart, but I have to use mac-boot to get it to boot into the GUI. Then the next time I shut down and start up I have the same problem. Not sure if it's a hardware (logic board?) problem or today I was wondering if it could be a bad battery.... (Someone at a local aftermarket Mac shop said it was logic board)

Here 's the semi exact message I get as it boots into open firmware:

Illegal Instruction at %SRRO: ff85aeec %SRR1: 00081000

Apple PowerBook5, 3 4.7.0f2 boo5 4om built on 8-28-03

Well, if you can spare $6, trying a new battery couldn't hurt... but it's strange that you're getting an error message in open-firmware -- that, to me, does indicate some kind of problem with the logic board.
