Powermac G5 sound problems

I've had a problem occur just recently. If I play music or watch a movie and I have headphones plugged in I can only hear through the left ear....right is completely silent. I have checked the sound pref pane to see if the balance has shifted over but that seems fine.

Any ideas? Is this a hardware or software fault?

Yes before you all ask at once, I have tried several pairs of headphones!!!

There is a 500gig external firewire drive being used but I have disconnected that and no updates have been installed for about a week.

I have tried the port on the back and get the same thing....no sound in the righty!

Restart your Mac while wearing your headphones. Do you hear the boot chime through both sides? If so, try creating a new user, and login as that user, and try listening through your headphones.
If none of these help, and you don't get ANYTHING from the right channel, and you have re-checked with another headphone, then you should have this checked by Apple service. There's a good chance that you have a failed sound chip - which means replacing the logic board.
If you get right channel (and both channels) from the boot tone, and nothing else, then you likely have a software problem. If you get both channels when logged in as another user, then you have a corupted file somewhere in your user preferences. Come back with what you find out...
