PPC processes

In preparing to move to Lion, I have noticed two PPC processes running all the time. Activity Monitor says 'launchd' is the parent of each. I think they are left over from an old backup program that I no longer use, but I can't be sure.

How can I discover what they are and, if they are what I think they are, how can I stop them from being launched?

What motivates your question? You should run man launchd from the Terminal command prompt. You will see that it is not a PPC-exclusive process for running legacy applications. It is an essential task. On my installation of Lion, launchd is Intel (64-bit).

launchd has two main tasks. The first is to boot the system, and the second is to load and maintain services.

I know what launchd is. Thanks. My motivation is to discover why it launches the two PPC processes named 'server' and 'agent' and how to stop it from trying to do so, since they won't run under Lion and I would like to avoid a slew of messages telling me that.

I suspect they belong to Tolis' BRU backup software, which I uninstalled more than two years ago.

Next step would be to manually remove those services.
someone may be able to provide some hints on how to find those, if you need that help.

After further investigation, my suspicions were confirmed - it was BRU. That system came with configuration tools for both 'server' and 'agent' - each has two settings: start/stop the daemon and start/stop the automatic launching of same. (The two processes running on the same machine allow the server to back itself up.)

I ran both tools. Each time it said the daemon was running and would start again at the next reboot. I clicked "stop" and watched the process disappear from Activity Monitor. Then I clicked "don't start" automatically. I'll confirm when I restart next time.

Keeping my digits crossed, the issue is gone. But I have no clue where these actions were controlled from - configuration file or some such.
