Hii guys,

I have to conduct a lecture, and since am new to mac i would like to know which software you recommand me to use similar to (power point in microsoft) and which connector to use to plug it in the data projector... or there is specifice projector for MAC...

I have a MacBook..

thanx in advance

Macs come with a short adapter cable that gives them the same VGA output as PCs. VGA output is a three-row-of-pins, D-shape connector.

I recommend PowerPoint.
Are you concerned you may have to use a PC at destination for the presentation?
My experience with PowerPoint going cross-platform is that it basically works the same, but the default fonts are slightly different. I would arrange time as soon as possible to copy your presentation to a PC to view the slides and adjust if necessary.

The MacBook does not come with any video adapter cable.
You need the Mini-DVI to VGA adapter, which you should be able to purchase at any Apple retailer, or you can order online from the Apple Store.

A projector will almost always have that VGA connection. Newer projectors may also have a DVI connector, but you can't plan on that unless you can be sure ahead of time. Even that DVI connector will require the Mini-DVI to DVI adapter from your MacBook.

Thanx gsahi .. i know powr point is perfect.. but i need something for mac and i don't want to install the windows in my mac..

is keynote good .. i never tired it?

i saw a different opinion on the DVI in apple store as shows in the link

which makes me a bit confused..
and the mini seems ok as well... but have ever used it ??

Are you aware there is a Mac version of PowerPoint available? It is part of the Office:Mac suite, and is perfectly compatible with the Windows version.

As for Keynote, personally that's what I use for lectures. Not because it is more powerful than powerpoint, because it's not. In fact, it has considerably less features than PP does. I like Keynote because it has a great interface and beautiful templates.

The best thing, though, is that people haven't seen keynote presentations before. Everyone is familiar with PP by now -- they can spot a PP title or transition a mile off. But Keynote looks very fresh and new.

In Keynote you can also save a presentation out in PowerPoint format, which is handy (though it usually requires a lot of cleaning up afterwards in PP, as the conversion is far from perfect)

I guess it comes down to what you will be doing. PP has some fancy features that keynote lacks, but if you're just making standard slides, then keynote is best IMO, at a much lower price than office.

EDIT: If your Mac is new, it should have come with a demo version of iWork so you may be able to try keynote out. YOu can also download a "test drive" demo of Office:Mac from microsoft.

thank you for the informative post... really i appreicate it...
since keynote can save as PP format... then can i open a PP in keynote...

You can open PP in Keynote (I do it all the time). I've been using PP for about ten years now (mostly on a PC). I switched to Mac about seven months ago, and used PP on the Mac for the first six. I changed over to Keynote about a month ago and love it SO much ... I don't see me ever using PP again. I MUCH prefer the interface, design, and video integration of Keynote.
The other thing that is great, is if you MUST play your Keynote presentation on a PC, and want all your transitions to work, you can "export" the file as a Quicktime movie. It will then run (along with all your extras) on the PC.

Switch to Keynote - you'll be so happy you did.

Thank The Cheese

where can i find office:mac... since messanger didn't work i doubt that office will work too

(yeah i have issues with massanger :( )

Keynote is leaps and bounds better than PowerPoint to me. It's cleaner and has a hell of a lot more professional feel than PowerPoint. The transitions, graphs and effects are just nicer; video integration is a nice, easy-to-use bonus. I know the business world has been using PowerPoint since cave paintings emerged; I just don't understand why. It's clunky and has a definite Toys R' Us feel to it, much like the Windows interface.

I am a college student in the world of Pc's. My brother is an Apple Tech and finally converted me to a mac. I have done an absolutely beautiful presentation in keynote, however, my college on has PCs and they don't have quicktime on their pcs. Is there any way to save my presentation as a .wav file? for XP media player 9?

If not, I guess I'll fork out the money for a DVI adapter. Their stuff is still all Comm ports.

If you go into Keynote and choose "Export", you'll see a number of options for exporting your file. However, all of these have some potential downfalls - loss of transitions or loss of video ability, etc.
A lot depends on what you've done in your Keynote. IF you used mainly 2D transitions, then there is a very good chance that when you "export" to PowerPoint, you will have almost no "tweaking" to do afterward.
Personally, I went out and got the dvi adapter and am using my MacBook to run my Keynote files.

I'm gonna go do that tonight and het the DVI, cuz I did a LOT of special eggects and really don't want to waste all that work. I will NEVER go back to PP again. It's crap compared to KN.

Thx again
