problem with login window

I'm having a very weird problem with my ibook (MacOs X 10.2):

I shutted the computer down and didn't used it for a week, and when I started it again I couldn't log in (although I was sure I was using the correct password and username). I tried accessing my computer from another one using an ftp program and it worked perfectly. Then I tried using the installer CD to reset the passwords, but when I tried to login to the computer I couldn't do it. I tried accessing my computer using ftp with the new password and it worked.
Then I tried to restart the computer and press "command + S" and ran 'fsck -y' at least 25 times, and in all of them the same problem appeared when Checking the Catalog File (which is the same problem that appears when I ran the disk utility of the installer cd):
"Overlapped extent allocation file 2562426d
Overlapped extent allocation file 256475d"
I then exit and restart the computer but I can't still login (the login window keeps 'shacking' after i enter the username and password)

Do I have any other option other than erasing the disk and re-installing the system? I have some files on the desktop that I wouldn't like to loose (I can't access them through ftp because the desktop is locked)

I appreciate any help:confused:

get a good drive repair utility and use it! You have definite directory problems, with 2 choices: Good drive repair utility; or reformat and reinstall. Hopefully the utility will work. If not, the 2nd choice may be the only one that finally fixes it.:(
