Question: 10.3 Ethernet failure

Hi, I have a G4 Dual 1.25 with 2 80 gig drives. I use Bellsouth DSL on a 2Wire Home Portal network on OS 9.2.2 and OS 10.2.8. I have been trying to get it working with 10.3.9, which is on the second drive, but nothing seems to be able to get the ethernet to connect with the Portal.

HELP!!!
 
i can't get the Network Settings to stick. As soon as I exit System Preferences they disappear. Also my System Profiler app crashes when I click on Network.
