Question about Airport Extreme Base Station

I am considering buying an Airport Extreme Base Station to replace the devices I have right now. Firstly, I'm assuming if i got one with the 56k modem I could set it up to dial out to our EarthLink account, correct? Also, it says the thing has an Ethernet jack on it. Does this mean I could plug my iMac directly into that jack rather than having to spend the money on an Airport card I don't really want or have a need for? Thanks.

Sure, but the Base station is designed for a wireless network! If you're not going to use the wireless function, then why get a base station at all? Your old iMac won't take an Airport Extreme card anyway, although it will work fine with the older slower Airport card, which will probably be pretty cheap!

Yes to both of your questions. The ABS that comes with a modem will allow you to connect to your dial-up ISP. The ethernet jack that comes on it, will allow you to connect your iMac to it.

Now I've got questions for you. How will having an ABSE benefit you? You'd use its wireless capabilities, no? Afterall, that's its main purpose. Do you have another computer, aside from the iMac you mentioned?

P.S: And if you can, and if you surf a lot, get rid of dial-up! Get broadband. The difference in price, compared to dial-up, is not as great as the the difference in performance. Get it, if you surf a lot..

While we don't have any Airport Extreme computers in the house I know the Extreme base station would be perfect. Currently I have a Compaq wireless access point coupled to a dialup router that dials the modem out. We're a half a mile off the road so broadband, Cable, DSL, and Satellite are out of the question since we're surrounded by trees and it would cost too much to run lines back. The modem on the base station would allow us to dial out, and it would work better than the jenky Zoom modem I have right now. I have my iMac hooked up to the access point through Ethernet since the access point is sitting right next to my computer. By upgrading to an Airport Extreme Base Station, I could consolidate devices from 3 to 1 which would save on plug space and power consumption. We have two computers that are wireless right now and once I graduate from high school I plan on buying a laptop. If I end up getting a 12" PowerBook (which I'd like to because they're small and powerful) I could then take advantage of 802.11g. Even if I didn't get a PB the fact I could have one device to do the job of the three I have right now would be great. So I'm not completely crazy ;) And it looks like the base station is gonna be on my list of stuff to get in the near future. Thanks to all who replied :)
