Question about Applecare and iMac servicing

We've got an Intel-based iMac (I believe it's Intel based) running OS X Tiger. We've been experiencing a problem where the system will go into energy saver mode at random but consistently when running a particular business application. I've done some searches on the behavior and have read many comments from people who have had their logic board and/or power supply replaced to solve the problem.

We got this iMac used so I imagine it's out of warranty. I would like to take it to an Apple store to have the someone at the genius bar take a look at the machine.

My question: will we need to purchase AppleCare protection for iMac before we can have the machine serviced at an Apple store?

Thanks!

Peace...

If the Mac is more then a year old, it's probably too late to buy Applecare
AppleCare must be purchased before the original 1 year warranty expires.
But that fact aside, Apple will be more then happy to sevice your iMac, for a price.

Just as a hunch... I had something very similar to what you detail, and your machine being second-hand this could be a cause. You may want to check.

In my case the memory sticks in the iMac were not identical (I did the purchasing myself and put them in) so iMac started being erratic. Now since I have put 2 identical bars in, no problem.

Hope this helps

If you want to find out which processor your Macintosh has, just go to the Apple menu and select "About This Mac". In that windows, it will tell you what processor you have. My iMac G5 shows "2 GHz PowerPC G5" in the "About This Mac" window.
