Hello, I'm A windows user or have been i'm about to try A MAc.

I Bought A MAcbook off my friend. He gave me the Disk file .DMG image..

which is about 7-8 GB... the macbook is kind of fucked at the moment it dosent boot up, so I need to re-install it. I Dont feel like re-purchasing 2 brand new disks.

My external harddrive is a Lachie 1 terrabyte that was formatted in windows. i think its NTFS or Fat32. anywheys.. if I PUt the .DMG image on my external..

and hold down the option...

Can I Completly Re-install this way? As I Only have the .DMG 7-8 Gb image.

Please let me know asap.

No the DMG has to be burned with disk utility so its bootable.

I'd be careful broadcasting that you have a pirated version of OS X.

No one around here will help you with that.

Which "Disk file .DMG" file do you have? Quite frankly, I'm skeptical. You need a System Restore disc. Assuming that you can burn a new disc from a disc image file, it is my understanding that the file should be an .iso or .cdr (MacOS X CD/DVD master) disc image. What is more, Macs do not boot into NTFS or FAT32.

You need to burn a new System Restore disc. Then boot your Mac from that disc and use it to restore your Mac to its as-shipped state.

No, it can be burned in a DMG. Thats the most common, but it can't be burned in anything but os x from what ive heard.

You do NOT need a "System Restore" disc, MisterMe. In fact, that would be the wrong way to go, since you wouldn't necessarily know it's the _right_ System Restore disc. A retail disc is the way to go.

The 7-8 GB disk image is for a Dual Layer DVD. Those that mention 8.5 GB space. AFAIK, you'll require a Mac and Disk Utility to burn it correctly. You won't be able to boot the MacBook from your NTFS or FAT32 formatted harddrive while it simply has the disk image file on it. That's not how it works.

1) Find a Mac with an installation of OS X that is stable enough to run Disk Utility.
2) Copy the DMG to that computer.
3) Connect LaCie to that computer.
4) Open "Disk Utility".
5) Format LaCie as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" and set the partition scheme to "GUID"
6) Select "Restore" pane
7) "Source" is DMG file, "Destination" is LaCie
8) Click "Restore"
9) Plug LaCie into bad computer
10) Boot bad computer from LaCie, and install OS X.

WARNING! EDCC's post will, of course, erase the complete data you already have on the LaCie disk!

I Do not have the second restore disk only the first.... by the way I have the Retail... .DMG 7 gb image. and i dont think i can use disk utility on the mac.. it only gets to the login screen and freezes there each time...............

what should i do?

Try booting into safe boot mode - by holding the shift key until you get to the login screen.
If it still freezes at that login screen, then you need to boot to your installer disk (whoops!), and install using the Archive & Install option.

If you have access to a PC, you could try to google for some software that will let you burn a disk from that .dmg

I have access to A PC. and I have the Retail .DMG image for os X. The Mac will not boot into safe mode. The only problem is I Dont have A dual Layer burner, is there A way I Could burn the DMG onto 2 dvds?.... or is there anywhey I Could boot from the .DMG if i put it on my external harddrive.. bah... i'm A bit confused... i just want my mac working :( lol

No, you can't do it.

You are going to need, at the very minimum, a working Macintosh computer running some version of OS X (preferably 10.3 or later) to do anything useful with that DMG.
