Questions about Panther

goonies never say die
Once I get my paycheck in 2 weeks, I am planning on buying Panther and installing it on my PowerMac G4. Here are my questions.... In a previous post, there was a link to buy Panther on Ebay. I clicked on the link and all the Panther software is referred to as upgrades and its about $40 to $50 dollars less than retail version.

1. Is there any difference between these upgrades, compared to the ones I can purchase at Apple or Macmall?

2. When I go to install Panther, is there a CD-key I have to enter? And if so, my concern is this. I bought a used game on Ebay once and when I went to play it, I got a message that the CD-key I entered was already in use.

3. Can I use the upgrade to also update my iMac that I have or would I have to spend the extra money and purchase the family version?

The upgrade CD's are just that, upgrades. You need a previous X system to upgrade from. Get the full install CD.

No CD key to install.

Be careful buying from ebay.

Can I use the upgrade to also update my iMac that I have or would I have to spend the extra money and purchase the family version?

We can't tell you that. :)

Thanks for the info. I think I'll get Panther from Macmall while that $9.99 shipping deal is still going on.

And one more question.....

Should I do a clean install and then go back in a install all my Adobe and Macromedia applications or should I just update the operating system?

A fresh, clean install is ALWAYS the best way to go. Archive and Install is basically the same thing -- it installs a new system while archiving the old one.

I always fresh install when doing a major OS upgrade. If you've got your music, photos and documents backed up from your user folder, I'd say do a fresh format/fresh install and reload your applications.

I have TONS of apps, mostly educational, installed on my machine and I can fresh format, reload OS X, reload my applications and set all my preferences/UI customizations back to the way I want them in under 4 hours. That's quick considering how much stuff I have installed. If you've just gotta reload the Adobe and Macromedia suites, then the whole process should take around an hour, give or take.

Remember: back stuff up you need. I cringe with sympathy every time I see a new thread entitled "Help! I deleted my (insert various important files here) -- how do I get them back?!"

Archive and Install is basically the same thing

Not true. Clean install will wipe the drive clean, giving you a like new drive to install on. Archive doesn't do this.

I meant that it's the same thing in terms of the system installed -- it's a FRESH install of the OS X system, it just doesn't wipe your hard drive first.

I think it to be VERY similar to a fresh install, because it is.
