Quicktime error 2048

I have downloaded Quicktime, but still get this when I download movies and can't open them. I am willing to buy a program that will let me do this.
It is a Xvid movie I also have downloaded Perian.

Try playing the movie with VLC (available with a super-simple Google search).

Yes I already have downloaded VLC and that didn't work
