is it possible to use software to double my ram in osx or is this a stupid question, if it is why

OS X already does that automatically, I've seen terminal screens with top showing 2-3 GB of Virtual Ram in use with only 512 MB installed, Others probably have seen higher figures. The real results are the same, though. If there is a lot of 'soft' memory in use. (pageouts) then the whole system will probably be slowed some.
