RAM problem with G5 dual 1.8

Hi All,

First I had four slots of RAM in use (8 total) like this:

J11 - 256
J12 - 256
J13 - 1 gb
J14 - 1 gb
(nothing in the rest)

All was well

I have just installed another pair of 1 gb chips so I expected to see this:

J11 - 256
J12 - 256
J13 - 1 gb
J14 - 1 gb
J41 - 1 gb
J42 - 1 gb
(nothing in the rest)

But instead I see this:

J11 - Empty
J12 - Empty
J13 - 1 gb
J14 - 1 gb
J41 - 1 gb
J42 - 1 gb
(The rest empty too)

I haven't touched the pair of 256mb chips so why have they dissapeared??

I tried switching the pair of 256mb chips to J43 and J44 (the outer most slots) and now they work! i.e

J11 - Empty
J12 - Empty
J13 - 1 gb
J14 - 1 gb
J41 - 1 gb
J42 - 1 gb
J43 - 256mb
J44 - 256mb


Why is this? Does it matter if there's no ram in the first pair of slots?? All of the ram is PC3200 btw.

If you reinstall the 2x256 in the innermost slot pair, you'll likely find that they work there also. You can operate with pairs in any paired position. The inner slots can remain empty.
The 2x256 probably just needed to be reseated, moving them to another slot-pair achieved that purpose.
