Removing the 40gb standard ata drive from the emac, and looking at replacing it with a 250gb, problem is I dont know what drive to choose for a server enviroment, looking for something fast, reliable and not to hefty on the pocket, Our current situation is we have about 5 machines connected to it all sharing files, so I think a fast drive is vital. Any recommendations would e greatly appreciated!

Here's a WD 250GB drive, special edition with 8MB cache (to improve read/write times and latency) for $150. Can't beat that.

Wow that sure beats Apple's factory upgrade to 160 GB for 210 $ (Canadian).

No kidding... and the fluid-dynamic bearings make them some pretty damn quiet drives. I've got a 120GB in my machine and I can't hear it at all. Just put another one into a B&W G3, and I can't hear it either. Great drives.

Only problem is this 60GB 7200RPM Western Digital drive I've got in my machine as well -- it doesn't have the fluid-dynamic bearings, and it whines like an SOB all the time. You get used to it, but I'd love to slap another 120GB in there for an ultra-quiet machine.

Flud dynamic bearings, cool !

It's good o know, I'm planning on getting an eMac to replace my iMac soon and that wimpy little 40 GB drive just won't cut it. It's good to know I have options.

Is swapping a drive out of an eMac a (relatively) simple job, or is it like swapping it out of an original iBook, which wasn't ?
