I am reinstalling from CD on my G4 400mhz and just before the install completes I get a message that there were errors encountered and the install dies. I checked the CDs before installing, any ideas on how to find out what is happening?

Thanks,
Brian

Startup from the system cd, then try using Disk Utility to repair your disk and repair permissions, that may help. If not (and if you haven't already) then get your data off the machine (perhaps using target mode; connect it to another machine via firewire, then startup the dubious machine with the T key held down, and its HD will mount on the other machine), then format the drive and start again.

Alternatively, if you have a friend with panther as well, try installing from their disks (you own it too so it should be legal), if it works, you know the problem is with your disks not your computer.

Most common problem that I have seen that causes errors in installing 10.3 - is bad memory. Have you checked the hard drive? (Use the disk utility when booted to the Panther install CD, it's in the Installer menu at the very first window)

The Apple Hardware Test CD that originally came with your G4
or... you can download 'memtest' from versiontracker.com
or... just take out any non-apple memory and try the install again, (while you're doing that, make certain that nothing external is plugged into your system, including USB hubs, other drives or devices, just have your mouse and keyboard, and display attached)
If your install completes, then some of your additional memory may not be playing well with OS X...
