restart/shutdown & entourage login

I just finished reformatting and reinstalling 10.5.6, and up date to 10.5.7 My computer will not shut down/restart. I have to force it by holding down the on/off button.
Another thing entourage keeps asking for my password, and telling me I HAVE NO INTERNET CONNECTIon. I have entered the pass word 10 times and I do have a connection. When these errors come on, it freezes the computer.
 
What version of Microsoft Office do you have?

How long have you waited to see if your Mac eventually shuts down on its own?
Try pressing Option-Command-esc, which will bring up the Force Quit window. What's in that window, other than Finder? Select any item that says not responding, and then force quit that item. Does that help? Which app is it?
