RETRIEVING LOST FILES - SONY Camera disconnection

I would like to ask for some help me retrieving some lost files (photographs) on my computer/camera.

On Sunday evening, I was uploading photos from my Sony DSC-T10 camera onto my Mac OSX v.10.3.9 Powerbook. While I was deleting some of the files I had uploaded, the camera battery died and was not properly ejected from my computer.

After I re-charged the batteries, I connected my camera to my computer again and the computer could not detect any files/photos in my camera. I had approximately 512 photos on the camera that have disappeared.

Note that when I connect my camera to my computer, the files I had been deleting just before the camera battery died shows in my Trash folder. However, when my camera is not connected to my computer, the files do not appear in my Trash folder.

I went to Applications > Disk Utility to attempt to find my lost files and the following information appears at the bottom of the screen:

Format: MS-DOS File System
Permissions Enabled: No
Folders: 0
Capacity: 949.8 MB
Available: 775.5 <B
Used: 174.3 MB
Number of Files: 512

When I use the First Aid function and attempt to Repair the disk, the following information appears on the screen:

Mounting Disk** /dev/disk1s
Phase 1 – READ FAT
Phase 2 – Check cluster chains
Phase 3 – Checking Directories
Phase 4 – Checking for Lost Fiels
116 files, 794080 free (24815 clusters)
1 non HFS volume repaired.

I am devastated. Could you advise me as to (a) whether it is possible to retrieve the lost files; and (b) if so, how I could go about doing so on my own?

Many thanks

The Trash can with the pictures is on your camera. Move your picture files from the Trash back to their proper location. You may also move them to your computer's hard drive.

Dear MisterMe,

Thank you very much, that is very helpful!

Sorry to be so clueless but I cannot seem to see the Trash in my camera? When I hook it up to my computer, only three files appear on the directory and none of them are Trash cans. Could you guide me through this?

Many thanks

Whether your photos are on your digital camera (or on a removable digital memory card in your camera), or they are on your Mac's hard drive, but were trashed or otherwise deleted, you can recover them with any of these:

Data Rescue II (I recommend this one)
http://prosofteng.com/

Stellar Phoenix Macintosh

FileSalvage*

VirtualLab*

Boomerang

Media Recover

This is free:
EXIF Untrasher (free, donations accepted)
Restores graphic files deleted from camera's memory card.
http://www.bluem.net/en/mac/exif-untrasher/

There are some free UNIX command line utilities that will do the same as the above commercial utilities:

Photorec*
http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec

testdisk*
http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk

I tried using the exif untrasher program, it is telling that " there may not be enough space on the selected drive" 9 to create a clone ( I have 1.6T available). What could be the problem, I followed the instructions provided.
Please help. Thanks
A
