I use a PowerBook G4 laptop. Mac OS X version 10.4.6.

In last 2 days, there have been many problems opening certain applications and programs.

For example, when I clicked on "About This Mac", the window opened and I clicked on Software Update. The machine started to load, and then I got a message:
"The application Software Update quit unexpectedly." I clicked on Report... and saw this:

Earlier I tried to open an Excel document on my desktop that I look at everyday. This dialog box popped up:
Application Launch Failure:
The application "Excel" could not be launched because of a shared library error: "+<Microsoft Excel><CarbonLib><CFMPriv_ATS><>"

And when I try to open Safari, I get this message:

I hope something can be done. I appreciate your help!

Jason

Well it looks like something is messing up in the core image root file. It maybe hardware related, but I am not sure. So lets try to narrow down the problem. Please follow these steps:

1. Find the current original OS X install disk or the original Software Restore disks (that can e with the Mac).

2. Boot from the DVD/CD like you are going to re-intall.

3. When the first install screen comes up, don't go on with the install.

4. From the limited install Finder menu find the Disk Utility application and run it. In Disk Utility run all the repair functions are report anything back.

Good luck.
