I am designing a website with iWeb. I am linking to Windows Media audio and video files. On my PC, the files play with no problem. On my Mac, no such luck. I do have Windows Media Player installed on my Mac. And, the Windows Media Player application launches when I select the link. However, I get an error message that says:
The specified stream type is not recognized.

Can you help me work around this glitch?

It's not a glitch. MicroSoft dropped support for WMP on a Mac quite a
while back. The Mac needs Flip4Mac (free from microsoft.com) which
patches QuickTime for (most) WMAs and WMVs.

Well it looks like you need some QuickTime plugins that extend QuickTime's video/audio playback. Take not though, the new Windows Media DRM (i.e. Windows Media Player 10 files - they are all incased dreaded propriety DRM) will not play on a non-Microsoft system.

So here is a list of must have QuickTime plugins:

1. Perian - Free
2. Flip4Mac - Free & Paid Advanced
3. DivX Free & Paid
4. QuickTime MPEG-2 - Paid
5. QuickTime Pro - Paid (you will be able to export video/audio and go full screen

With these QuickTime plugins you will be able to play 91% off all video you'll ever come across.
