Safari shutdown takes an age

Every now and again when I quit Safari I get the old spinning beach ball and it seems to take Safari and age to actually go - at least 30 seconds and sometimes up to 2 minutes. During this time, hard disk activity ranges from manic to none.

Is there a problem and, if so, how can I fix it?
 
I would move the com.apple.safari.plist file from the home/Libraries/Preferences into another directory and see how this affects safari.
 
I see this same behavior from time to time. It usually happens when I manually clear the cache and then quit -- it sounds like Safari is going through the hard drive and deleting all the cache files due to the hard drive noise.

It may be that Safari on your machine is doing the same thing -- it'll clear out cache files on its own if you don't do it manually.

I've moved that file and I've also cleared the 'library/safari/icons' folder and made it read-only as suggested on the Apple forum.
