set primary DNS in a internet key setting

I've an Internet key (settings requested: phone number/web address/primary DNS): I put only the first 2 because with the third one (needed to speed up the connection) it doesn't works. I put the primary DNS requested on MACUSBmodem (DNS page, on the left).

once I plug on the key the program to manage the connections starts: Win/Mac applications are different. on Win you're able to set-up (on advanced options) the primary DNS: the speed of the key is 1,5 Mbit/s. witout that setting the speed is 300 k/s.
on Mac the program is different and you haven't the chance to set up the primary DNS and the speed is 300 k/s. so I tried to set the macusb_modem (network preferences) and I was able to run the key without the program. but...I'm not able to set up the primary DNS because once I put the DNS the connection doesn't work anymore....

I'm still not following you. Maybe I'm just not up-to-date with the terminology or something.

What is an "internet key" exactly? Some sort of USB modem? DSL? Cable? 3G?

You can change DNS settings in the "Network" pane of the System Preferences. Are you saying that when you input the proper DNS settings that you can no longer connect?

What is "without the program?" What "program" are you talking about? With whom is the service through (Verizon, Orange, etc.)?

internet key: an USB webkey powered by Vodafone

with the key there's a program auto-installing. the program is different in Mac and Win. in Win program it's possible to set up the primary DNS obtaining a good speed (1,5 Mbit/s). in Mac no chance to do that. so i'm trying to use Network preferences to avoid using the program in the key... but:
if you set up phone n° and web address (on Mac usbmodem) the system works (at 350 kbit/s max). if set up also the DNS the system connect (you see the time running...) but you don't connect to any internet page.
note 1: the set up has to be done when it's not connected.
note 2: I always need to open the program (without connecting) to work with Mac usbmodem to load the driver, I think..

thanks
