Show time connected - OSX 10.2

This is from one of our readers, could anyone help me with this:

I hope you can help me with this problem. I recently installed OS X
10.2 on my iMac 9.2 and am slowly learning how to drive it! On the
Menu Bar the telephone icon used to connect brings up what is obviously
meant to be the time connected but all I get is the 00:00:00 with no
progressive time.
I got through to "Apple Support" and they told me to download 10.2.1
which I did but this has made no difference. I checked with "Support
again and they told me it is not meant to show the time connected!
Incidentally - yes I have "Show Time Connected" checked.

All I can say is that it has worked perfectly for me ever since I upgraded to Jaguar. Do you have any of his/her computer specs, in particular his/her means to connect to the internet?

Are you connecting through a dial-up connection or a PPPoE connection, or are you on some kind of network?

This is a dial-up connection with the internal 56k modem via ppp using an iMac G3 500 256MB Ram, 30GB HD
