Sleep Mode when MBP laptop is closed

How can I get my MacBook Pro to go into sleep mode when I close it? Right now when I open it back up it's on the exact screen that it was when I closed it, instead of taking a second to power back up and ask for my password (which it used to do).

Is the sleep indicator light pulsing when you close the lid?
Are you waiting a few seconds before re-opening the lid?

Open the program in /Applications/Utilities/Console and read the the log just after the Mac refused to sleep. It then should tell you what program is causing the sleep problem.
