Sleeping issues ( yes - again!)

Hi,
Re: Mac OS 10.4.3, Dual G5 2.3, 2GB AppleRam, 20" Apple LCD, all purchased new AUG 2005. Peripherals (older) : HP deskjet 970cxi, Epson 1200u scanner, Logitech Mouse, speakers linked to hi-fi, USB CFcard reader

I know there are lots of sleeping issues, and have read most ( I hope) of the threads relating to this. I was very au fait with troubleshooting Mac OS 9 but X has me baffled, it's a completely new ( beach)ball game, so I am not OK with terminal commands etc unless explained step by step.

However from reading those threads it seems like there are many different scenarios and the solutions and outcomes depend on the minutae of the case, so let em relate mine and hopefully someone can tell me if it's more thana software issue - at the moment I only suspect software but have a little concern that it may be more. As I understand from the other threads on this the Mac I have doesn't have a PMU?
---------

I noticed that my Mac wakes shortly after going to sleep. It will later sleep OK when set to do so by the energy saver, but if I set it to sleep manually (apple menu>sleep) it nearly always wakes immediately after. Sometimes it wakes on its own in the night ( I'm told)

However yesterday, it did something it has only done once before and that is: it was asleep ( I thought) when it started revving the fans loudly , slowly getting faster and faster, it really sounded like it was trying to get off the ground. I couldn't wake it from sleep or get it to react at all by pressing any keys or using the mouse. It was just revving faster and faster, so I shut it down by pressing the power button for a while. After that it restarted OK

I reinstalled the system software yesterday using archive and install to try and address the sleep issues , which I think came on after I tried ONYX ( won't do that again!). This revving issue is since the reinstall. All software updates and Disk utility run.

What's going on? What's the solution? Is it just a software problem?

One of your USB devices might be the problem. For an experiment try unplugging everything ( but not the mouse) and see if the same thing happens. If it does then do a process of elimination.

Thanks- I tried that but it didn't do the trick

I remeber now that this happened before a couple of months ago and Apple tech guy fixed it by getting me to type something into the console ( what a dreadful memory!)

Wish I could remember what it was!

I don't think this is a software problem...
My imac G5 was having a sleepnig problem and the fans were blowing as well..
I reinstalled the os software as to the request of the Genius guys and still had the problem... ( it goes to sleep every 10 seconds )
I have been telling the apple guys that it is a hardware problem..
they are in the process of finally looking at the machine, opened up, as we speak....
The closesst thing that i can say is the power supply in the machine or the logic board....
trying to get apple to agree with that will be hard...
this is the 4 time i've taking my machine in....
I only hope they can finally agree to the power supply and or logic board
