Slow internet browsing with OS 10.5.7

Loading web pages on my Mac Dual G5 is painfully slow, maybe 5-10 seconds to load a popular website (like this one, e.g.).
I'm running Safari v. 3.2.3, but the problem occurs with other browsers like Firefox and Camino.

I also have a Macbook Pro connected by ethernet to same router (Airport), running Safari 4.0.2, and it's just as slow as the desktop Mac.

My ISP is cable and various speed tests show download/upload speeds of 20 Mbps/2 Mbps. I have a PC running Windows Vista on same LAN, connected to same router, and it browses blazingly fast. So the problem is not ISP or modem.

As a lifelong Mac user, I hate to say this, but I'm jealous of my PC!

What could be the issue(s) and fix?

PowePC G5: Dual 2.7 GHz G5; 4 GB DDR RAM; OS v. 10.5.7
Macbook Pro: 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo; 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3; 10.5.7

Have you tried a test account on the Mac to see if the same thing is happening? Plus have you done any software maintenance on that Mac?

No I didn't try that yet. However, since I placed the opening post, I found a website that explained that the problem with Leopard is a new method of searching DNS servers. I tried their recommended fix and I'm blazing again.

Why Apple made the change from "A Record" queries to "SRV" queries isn't clear to me. However, bypassing the whole issue via manual entry of recommended OpenDNS servers solved the problem for me.

If you're interested in the link to the website that addresses this problem and its workaround, let me know.

By the way, what software maintenance for my Mac do you recommend?
