slow internet

I have an iMac version 10.5.8. I use both safari and firefox and they are both running very slow and at times getting stuck. I called Apple support and they led me through emptying my cache and cookies with both safari and firefox and then checked my available space and said I had plenty. They told me to take it to a repair shop. I can't believe there isn't more I can do at home to fix the problem. I know of the utility folder in applications but I don't know what to do in there. I have high speed internet -not wireless. My laptop runs fine when run from the same cable so the internet source is not the problem.

Did you try a cleaning application (free) like Yasu or Onyx and see if they help .

Note: After running all the "cleaning" routines and the program reboots your Mac, manually reboot immediately to completely rebuild your startup/shutdown cache.

Try one of these programs and see if that helps.

Try using AppleJack which IMHO does a far superior job of cleaning up your system, mostly due to the fact it does it's magic before OS X is loaded.

Make sure at step #3 that you select "yes" when prompted to clean user caches, you won't believe the amount of junk it dumps out.
