Slow login with golden triangle setup

We have a Mac Mini Server with 10.6.8 setup on a windows domian serving a small number of mac laptops and desktops, Mostly 10.6.8 OS.

Up untill reacently logins have been lightning fast, however now logins are taking between 10 and 50 seconds each time. this is becoming a problem for my users as they have to lock their desktops a lot and every time they sit down they are having to wait. Also initial logins in a morning take longer up to 5 mins.

Everything else seems to work well i can log in as a new AD users and ping all the relevent servers easily.

The only other thing to note is the windows domain is .local, because of this when setting up the macs I have run this command:

sudo /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c 'Set :mdns_timeout 5' /System/Library/SystemConfiguration/IPMonitor.bundle/Contents/Info.plist

in order to give the macs time to find the .local network, I have however tried lowing this timeout back to 1 but this doesnt improove things.

Ive also tried a fresh client install without AV or policies which also picked up the problems right away.

I found this error in the console on one of the clients i was testing with:

ODUGetMCXRecordWithCache error stating Accessing network user record from Active Directory not allowed because no authentication information was supplied

Googling that seems to pull up some users with similar issues of slow login but i havent been able to find a solid resolution to that issue.

Any thought on what I can check, I have a basic knowlage of the macs and set the system up initially but im not a heavy mac user.

The windows domain consists of 2x windows server 2003 enterprise servers set up as domain controllers

Mac OS X 10.2.6 or 10.6.2? 10.2 was released in 2002, and 10.2.6 would have been out somewhere in early 2003. And the systems that could have been running that OS would have been the ones sold before the first half of 2003, such as G3 iBooks, old PowerBooks etc.
10.6 would have been recently, so if the Macs are from the past few years it probably is 10.6 and not 10.2. (There are huge system differences between these systems, starting from 10.2 only being with PPC code... however I think it's more likely you are with 10.6 so if I'm wrong and they are in fact with 10.2 please correct me. Systems with 10.2 would only be able to run some older software by now)

Do you have McAfee? (Known to slow the login and use)

Can you check the /var/log/system.log for a time when the extreme slowness of the login happened?
There should be more in that log telling more in depth what happens.

Would the affected users ever get this error?
"You are unable to log in to the user account (username) at this time"
http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3346 - if the users have their sharepoints in different locations, trying the trick on that KB may do the trick.
 
hi giaguara, you are correct doh! 10.6.2 is the version were running (ill edit the first post thanks), we dont use mcafee here, we use trend micro worry free buisness security. the macs mostly have CalmAV installed but ive removed it from the server for the time being, and a mac ive been using for testing is also without av but has the same symptoms

We have yet to see any errors logging in just slowness

can you help me locate the /var/log/system.log, I can find the folder its stored in?

You can find all the logs in Console app, it's in /Applications/Utilities.
If you don't see on the left pane a list of different logs in Console, click on the Console icon on the toolbar to toggle the view.
All messages, and /system/log are some of the options for view.
 
heres what i think is the system log contents for some of today, its taking up to 1 min to log in on this system which is dire seems so slow

not sure if its of any use?

Sorry for delay...
The initial few minutes of that log, the system checks for software updates and downloads them. 7 minutes after there's the login screen.
Does it take that long for systems where the software is up to date, or where the software update check has been turned off (if allowed)?
 
As far as i know all the systems are up to date when i check for new it says up to date, i logged this system off and on a few times with the same results. Im just uploading a video to you tube to show the issue, might give you a clue as to where the problem lies.

Where are the home folders located?

Logging in a remote home may take a while. (but the time it takes here is a bit beyond normal)
If the home folders are not locally, could you test with setting 'Force local home directory on startup disk' in Directory Utility on one Mac, and see if that improves the log in time?

Indexing the MAC Address
When a Mac searches AD for policy applied to a computer on a computer account or as part of a Computer List, the system searches for the MAC address attribute in computer accounts. The MAC address that is searched for is the MAC address of the primary interface of the system (usually the built-in Ethernet port or wireless port on the MacBook Air). The system does not have to communicate with AD over this network port. The MAC address attribute is populated in a computer account when a Mac computer is bound to AD.
Because a Mac will periodically search for policy applied to its computer account, the MAC address attribute should be indexed within AD to improve search time and reduce overhead on domain controllers. Indexing the MAC address attribute within AD will provide greater responsiveness to searches and reduce CPU overhead on domain controllers.

home folders are set to local disk ill try to get a shot of the settings, its enforced by the mac mini server policies

ill check on my test mac just to be sure and look at the ad mac address stuff and get back to you
